Greenhouse for the future through the eyes of AI

Fieldlab Greenhouse for the Future

Working together on innovation in greenhouse horticulture

In 2027, the Greenhouse for the Future will open its doors on the Westland Flora Campus. In this fieldlab, companies, education institutions, and regional authorities will collaborate on innovations for the horticulture cluster. Which innovations these will be is not yet known. Therefore, the Greenhouse for the Future is launching a pitch contest.

Together, you go faster and get further. The Fieldlab will become a catalyst for a stronger international competitive position of the Dutch horticultural ecosystem. The challenges within the global food issue are so complex that an integrated and multidisciplinary approach is needed. The Fieldlab literally offers the space for this. So, no innovation from the drawing board, but a place to conceive, create, test, and demonstrate concrete, groundbreaking system solutions. Open, pre-competitive system-level innovation takes place in the Fieldlab.

The Building

The Fieldlab will be a building with work and office spaces on the ground floor and a production/testing facility in the form of a greenhouse on the upper floor. What makes the Fieldlab unique is that it offers a combination of a vibrant, state-of-the-art development environment with testing facilities (greenhouses, vertical farms, etc.) directly above. It’s a place where the smartest people from our cluster and beyond like to be because they can inspire each other and realize their ambitions. A building that, with its appearance and activities, enriches the Flora Campus and, therefore, also strengthens other functions of the campus, such as housing.

Principles of the Fieldlab Greenhouse for the Future:

  • A beautiful, sustainable building that attracts attention, a gem and magnet for the Flora Campus.
  • High-quality and inspiring development environment, in the heart of the Greenport.
  • Open innovation in quadruple helix, at the system level instead of separate components.
  • Long-term and programmatic work on socially relevant themes.
  • Connection with education and research: the bright minds and hands of the future.
  • Cross-overs within and outside the horticultural cluster, including (international) investors.
  • Seamless connection with WHC Naaldwijk, the HortiScience Innovation Center (HIC) in Bleiswijk, and other innovation hubs within and outside the sector.

Co-finance & Initiators

The Fieldlab Greenhouse for the Future will become the central physical location within Greenport West-Holland where businesses, knowledge institutions, and governments work together programmatically and pre-competitively on innovation programs for the mid- and high-tech horticulture of the future. The development trajectory of the Fieldlab Greenhouse for the Future is co-financed by the European Union and is an initiative of the World Horti Center, Vertify, Greenhouse Horticulture Netherlands, Tomatoworld, Harry Wubben Flowers, and Greenport West-Holland.

Inspiration

The Fieldlab Greenhouse for the Future will be the place for open innovation in the horticultural cluster. Similar initiatives exist in other sectors. For example, take a look at:

Pitch competition

Realizing the Fieldlab requires the involvement of many different stakeholders. The initiators are therefore looking for organizations that share their dream and want to contribute proactively – in whatever form. After all, together you go faster and get further. That’s why this week marks the launch of the Competition You Can’t Lose. Submissions must be received by October 7, 2024, at the latest. Read more about the competition.
